Math 662: Representations of the Symmetric group and Young Tableaux

Southwest Local ALgebra Meeting, 27—28 February 2016, Texas State University, San Marcos.
Texas Algebraic Geometry Symposium, April 2—3 2016, University of Texas.
Instructor: Frank Sottile
  Office: Blocker 601K

Frank has an open door office policy; just walk in when the door is open.
You may also schedule an appointment.
Seminar teas on Monday and Fridays (2:30 PM) are a good venue for catching
faculty members, including Frank.
Lectures:    Tu & Θ: 11:10—12:25. Blocker 605AX.
Recommended Text: The Symmetric Group by Bruce Sagan.
Additional Text: Some of you may find it useful to consult the book
Young Tableaux, by Wm. Fulton, Cambridge University Press, 1997.
Another good book is the classic Symmetric Functions and Hall Polynomials
by Ian Macdonald. Frank has several copies of all three.

Content
This course will develop the representation theory of the symmetric group from a combinatorial perspective. I intend to construct the irreducible representations and study their tensor-product decompositions, as well as develop the combinatorial theory of symmetric functions and Young Tableaux.

Possible further topics include the Hecke algebra and quasisymmetric functions.

Grading
I will assign one or two problems each week. The number of students and my travel schedule (I'll be in Nigeria in May) preclude final projects.
