 Calculator: Some of you may find such a device helpful, particularly for graphing or involved calculations, and for some graphs on the homework. If you have one, do learn to use it; if you do not have one you might not absolutely need one. No problem on any test will require a calculator, and so no such external aids allowed on exams. No student at your level should need mechanical help for simple algebraic manipulation.

Grading
You will be expected to attend all class meetings; I do keep track of such matters. There will be two in-term exams (each worth 20% toward your final grade) and the final exam will be worth 30%. The remaining 30% will be mostly Homework, but with some for attendance and for several short quizzes (such as the Greek Alpabet quiz on Thursday, September 11).
Exam Schedule    
Greek Alphabet Quiz: 11 September, beginning of class.
First exam: 23 October.
Second exam: 18 November.
Final Exam: TBA
Homework
Homework will be assigned daily in class and due either by the next class period, or once each week. (This depends upon our grader.) Late homeworks are not accepted. It may not be possible to grade all problems assigned. A few of the problems will be corrected and graded each week. Nevertheless, for your own benefit, you will be required to hand in all the assigned problems. Your grade on each homework will be calculated as follows: The two lowest homework scores will be dropped before computing your grade..
First Homework: Read this www page and send Frank an email to the effect that you read and understood the course policies. Text-only email, please! Ask questions if anything is unclear. Do put 127 in the subject header, please!
Second Homework: Read the review Chapter 1 in our book and do the following problems:
  • Section 1.1. 4a), 10, 28, 44, 52.
  • Section 1.2. 6, 14, 42, 68.
  • Section 1.3. 38, 62, 74, 86.
