Overview

This course begins with a quick review of some techniques of single-variable calculus (211), which is a prerequisite. We next study some applications of single-variable calculus, in both optimization and basic economics. The main part of the course will consist of an introduction to calculus in several variables, to Taylor approximation (aka `the theory of calculators'), and then a brief introduction to differential equations. Here is an approximate schedule (soon to be superseded by a more detailed one.)

19 Jan -- 9 Feb Chapters 1-4
16 Feb -- 16 Mar Parts of Chapters 5 and 6
18 Mar -- 1 Apr Chapter 7.1--7.6
8 Apr -- 20 Apr Sections 9.1 -- 9.3 (other text)
22 Apr -- 6 May Sections 8.1 -- 8.4.

Course Particulars

In Term Exams:
There will be two one hour in term exams; The first will be Thursday, 11 February and the second will be Tuesday, 13 April, both in class. Calculators are allowed on all tests, and you may bring with you a single 8.5" by 11" sheet of paper on which you may write anything you please. There will be no makeup tests, and you are excused from exams only for well-documented emergencies.
Homework:
I will assign homework regularly, and homework will be due on the following days. February 2, 18, and 25, March 4, 18, and 25, April 1, 22, and 29. Our grader will have your work marked by the following Tuesday. Late homeworks will not be accepted.
Final Exam:
Room 5231 Soc. Sci Bldg. 10:05 AM Wednesday, 12 May 1999.
Grading:
Each in term exam will count 1/5, and the homeworks will count also 1/5 of your final mark, and the final exam will count 2/5.
